Extreme Reactors

Adds large, multiblock power generation machines to Minecraft.

Adds131

Extreme Reactors builds power plants out of blocks: a reactor that burns uranium for FE, or one that boils water into steam for turbines. In ATM10 yellorium and uranium are one material, so mine All The Ores' Uranium Ore, smelt coal into Graphite Bars, and your first reactor is a three by three by three box. ATM10's config makes reactors and turbines give twelve times the mod's default power, and reactors burn 20% less fuel.

Yellorium in ATM10 is uranium

The mod's fuel is yellorium, and ATM10 switches off its ore: Yellorite Ore is not in the world. Mine All The Ores' Uranium Ore deep underground and smelt the Raw Uranium into Uranium Ingots. A reactor burns any uranium ingot as one ingot of yellorium and any Uranium Block as nine. Every recipe that asks for a Yellorium Ingot takes a uranium ingot, and the pack hides the mod's own ingot, so you will not see one.

Graphite Bars are the other thing you need from the start. Coal or Charcoal smelts into one in five seconds, in a furnace or a blast furnace, and a Block of Coal becomes a whole Graphite Block in 90 seconds.

A Book with a uranium ingot on top makes The Extreme Book, the mod's manual. The Extreme Wrench switches ports between input and output; it is green dye, four iron ingots and two wool.

Your first reactor

The smallest reactor is a three by three by three box with one fuel rod in the middle. It turns its heat straight into FE, which the mod calls passive cooling. Craft these Basic parts:

  • 22 Reactor Casing: four iron ingots, four graphite bars and a sand each.
  • One Reactor Controller: four casings, a comparator, two uranium ingots, a diamond and redstone.
  • One Fuel Rod: four iron ingots, two graphite bars, two glass and a uranium ingot.
  • One Control Rod: four casings, redstone, two iron ingots, a piston and a graphite bar.
  • One Solid Access Port: four casings, a hopper, two iron ingots, a chest and a piston.
  • One Active Power Tap: four casings, four redstone blocks and a redstone dust.
  • Build the frame, the twelve edges and eight corners, from casing.
  • Put a casing in the middle of the bottom face, the Fuel Rod in the very centre above it, and the Control Rod in the middle of the top face.
  • Put the Controller, the Access Port and the Power Tap in the middle of three side faces, and a casing in the fourth.
  • The reactor forms when the last block goes in. If it does not, right-click any of its blocks and it tells you what is wrong.
  • Right-click the Access Port, set it to inlet and put uranium ingots in. Turn the reactor on in the Controller and connect a cable to the Power Tap.

Burnt fuel becomes Cyanite. Add a second Access Port and set it to outlet: the reactor sends its waste there, and a chest placed against an outlet port fills by itself. Keep the cyanite. Turbines are built from it.

Reactor parts, sizes and rules

A reactor is a box. Its edges are casing only, its faces can hold glass and the ports, and the inside holds fuel rods and whatever moderator you fill it with. A Basic reactor is at most five by five by five. A Reinforced one goes up to 32 by 32 across and 48 high on our server. ATM10 has steel, so the Reinforced recipes use Steel Ingots where the Basic ones use iron.

Casing
The frame and any face. The Reinforced one is four steel ingots and four graphite bars around a Block of Iron, or around a Basic casing to upgrade it.
Controller
At least one, on a face. Turns the reactor on and off and shows its heat, fuel, waste and output.
Fuel Rod
Inside, in straight columns. Each column starts against the casing and ends at a Control Rod, and all columns run the same way, up and down or side to side.
Control Rod
One at the end of every column, all on the same face. Every reactor needs at least one.
Solid Access Port
Takes solid fuel in inlet mode and gives waste in outlet mode. It loses a little material on the way in.
Power Tap
Hands out the FE. The active one pushes it into the cable or machine against it; the passive one waits for something to pull.
Glass
Any face except the edges, to see inside. A casing between two glass.
Redstone Port
On a signal it turns the reactor on or off, ejects waste or sets the control rods. It also gives a signal when heat, fuel, waste or stored energy passes a value you set.
Reinforced only
The Fluid Ports, the Fuel Injection Port and the Computer Port, which lets a CC: Tweaked Computer run the reactor.

Anything inside that is not a fuel rod must be a valid moderator, or the reactor will not form. Press F3+H for advanced tooltips: blocks and fluids that work as moderators say so, and so do items that work as fuel.

Reactor design: fuel rods, control rods and moderators

A reactor runs on heat. Fuel in the rods gives off radiation, the radiation heats the fuel and the blocks around it, and that heat moves out to the casing. Casing heat is what becomes FE, or steam in an actively cooled reactor. Hot fuel burns faster, so moving heat away from the rods matters.

Radiation from a fuel rod travels up to four blocks sideways, away from its column. When it reaches another fuel rod, that rod soaks it up, and fuel that has soaked up radiation burns more slowly. The Controller shows this as Fuel Reactivity. Columns within four blocks of each other feed each other this way, and a lone column gets none of it. The mod also rewards size: the more fuel stands behind each control rod, the more radiation every unit of it gives off.

Control rods hold it all back. At 0% insertion a column runs flat out, and at 100% it makes no radiation and burns nothing. The Control Rod's screen sets one rod or all of them, and a Redstone Port can set them all from a signal.

Whatever fills the space between the rods is the moderator. The mod gives each one four figures: absorption, how much of the radiation passing through it the block takes; heat efficiency, how much of that it turns into heat; moderation, how much it softens the radiation that goes on, which makes it easier for the next fuel rod to catch; and conductivity, how fast it carries heat. The figures below are absorption, heat efficiency and moderation.

Empty space
0.10, 0.25, 1.10.
Water
0.33, 0.50, 1.33.
Graphite Block
0.10, 0.50, 2.00. Takes as little as empty space, softens far more, and conducts heat like gold.
Block of Iron
0.50, 0.75, 1.40.
Block of Gold
0.52, 0.80, 1.45.
Block of Diamond or Emerald
0.55, 0.85, 1.50.
Enderium Block
0.60, 0.88, 1.60.
Block of Netherite
0.55, 0.95, 1.65.
Block of Allthemodium
0.697, 0.942, 3.84.
Block of Vibranium
0.24, 0.81, 7.47. The highest moderation of any block.
Block of Unobtainium
0.972, 0.91, 3.074, and the best heat conductor here.
Cryomisi
0.75, 0.55, 1.60. A fluid from the Fluidizer.
Tangerium
0.90, 0.75, 2.00. A fluid from the Fluidizer.
Redfrigium
0.66, 0.95, 6.00. A fluid from the Fluidizer.

The mod does not rank them. A moderator that takes little and softens a lot, like graphite or vibranium, passes more radiation on to the next fuel rod. One that takes a lot turns more of it into heat where it stands. Fluids count as source blocks; flowing cryomisi, tangerium and redfrigium score lower. Many other metal blocks are moderators too, and the F3+H tooltip shows which.

Active cooling: steam for turbines

Put a Fluid Port in a reactor and it stops making FE: its casing heat boils water into steam instead, which the mod calls active cooling. The steam drives turbines. Fluid Ports exist only for the Reinforced reactor, so active cooling starts there.

  • Build a Reinforced reactor with at least two Fluid Ports: one set to input for water, one to output for steam. The wrench switches them.
  • Pipe water in. Water is the only coolant in ATM10 and steam the only vapor; the mod's other fluids are moderators.
  • Pipe the steam to a turbine, and the turbine's water back to the reactor.

A passive Fluid Port waits for your pipes. An active one pushes and pulls by itself. The Mekanism Fluid Port hands the steam out as Mekanism steam, so the reactor can feed Mekanism's Industrial Turbine as well.

Turbines: rotor, blades and coils

A turbine turns steam into FE. It is a box of Turbine Housing with a rotor down the middle: steam spins the blades, and coils around the far end of the shaft turn the spin into power. A Basic turbine is at most five by five across and ten high; a Reinforced one goes up to 32 on every side on our server. Both are built with Cyanite, so run a reactor first.

  • Build the frame from Housing. The faces can be Housing or Turbine Glass.
  • Put the Rotor Bearing in the middle of one face. A turbine has exactly one.
  • Run Rotor Shafts from the bearing all the way to the housing on the far side.
  • Put Rotor Blades on the shaft, starting next to the bearing. A blade sticks out sideways from the shaft, and more blades can carry on outward from it.
  • Put coils around the shaft past the last blades, toward the far end. A ring around the shaft holds up to eight: the four blocks touching it and the four corners between them.
  • Add a Controller, a Fluid Port for the steam, another set to output for the water, and a Power Tap.
  • Open the Controller, engage the coils and set the flow rate.

Each blade can take 25 mB of steam a tick on a Reinforced turbine and 15 mB on a Basic one; steam beyond what the blades can take is used less efficiently. A Reinforced turbine takes up to 2,000 mB/t, which needs 80 blades, and a Basic one up to 1,000 mB/t. Divide your flow by the blade figure to get the count.

The coils make the power, and they brake the rotor while they do it. Turbines work best at 900 or 1800 RPM. Between those two speeds their efficiency falls as low as half, and below 500 RPM it is never more than half. Add coils to slow the rotor down and take some away, or add steam, to speed it up. Keep it under 2,000 RPM: the Controller itself warns against going past that.

Coil blocks, with the mod's three figures: efficiency, bonus and extraction.

Block of Iron
1.0, 1.0, 1.0. The baseline.
Block of Gold
2.0, 1.0, 1.75.
Block of Netherite
2.2, 1.02, 1.8.
Electrum Block
2.5, 1.0, 2.0.
Platinum Block
3.0, 1.0, 2.5.
Enderium Block
3.0, 1.02, 3.0.
Ludicrite Block
5.23, 1.04, 3.45.
Ridiculite Block
7.47, 1.21, 3.46.
Inanite Block
9.76, 1.3, 6.93.
Insanite Block
13.74, 1.41, 6.93.

Efficiency multiplies the energy the coils make, bonus is an exponent on it, and extraction is how hard they pull on the rotor. A turbine with mixed coils uses the average, so you can start with gold and swap in better blocks one at a time. Copper, tin, lead, steel, silver and many other metal blocks count as coils too, all weaker than gold.

Cyanite, the Reprocessor and new fuels

Burnt fuel becomes Cyanite Ingots. Turbines need them, and the rest can become fuel again in the Reprocessor: two cyanite and 1,000 mB of water make a Blutonium Ingot. Blutonium burns in any reactor through the same Access Port, and its waste is Magentite.

The Reprocessor is a fixed three by three tower, seven blocks high, framed in Reprocessor Casing. It takes one of each other part: the Waste Injector on the top face, the Collector on the bottom face, and the Controller, Fluid Injector, Output Port and Power Port on the sides. Glass can fill the rest of the side faces.

Blutonium Ingot
Two Cyanite Ingots and 1,000 mB of water.
Ludicrite Ingot
Two Blutonium Ingots and 1,000 mB of liquid cyanite.
Ridiculite Ingot
Two Ludicrite Ingots and 1,000 mB of liquid magentite.
Inanite Ingot
Two Ridiculite Ingots and 1,000 mB of rossinite.
Insanite Ingot
16 Benitoite crystals and 2,000 mB of rossinite.

Liquid cyanite and magentite come from the Fluidizer. Rossinite is the waste of verderium, a liquid fuel, and leaves the reactor through a Fuel Injection Port set to outlet. These ingots make the best turbine coils: eight around an End Crystal make a Ludicrite Block, around a Nether Star a Ridiculite Block, around a Block of Netherite an Inanite Block, and around an Inanite Block an Insanite Block.

The Fluidizer and liquid fuels

The Fluidizer turns solid fuel into liquid and mixes new fluids. It is a box from three by three by three up to 16 on a side, framed in Fluidizer Casing, with glass allowed on the faces. It needs exactly one Controller on a side face, at least one Output Port and one Power Port, and injectors that decide what it does. It uses 25 FE for every tick of work on our server.

  • One Solid Injector: ingots and blocks into liquid.
  • Two Solid Injectors: two solids mixed into a new fluid.
  • Two Fluid Injectors: two fluids mixed into a new one.
Liquid yellorium
1,000 mB from any uranium ingot, 9,000 mB from a uranium block. These two are ATM10's own recipes.
Liquid cyanite, blutonium, magentite
1,000 mB from an ingot, 9,000 mB from a block.
Verderium
2,000 mB from two uranium ingots and a Blutonium Ingot, 18,000 mB from two uranium blocks and a Blutonium Block, or 2,000 mB of liquid yellorium mixed with 1,000 mB of liquid blutonium.
Cryomisi
500 mB from a Redstone Dust and a Snow Block.
Tangerium
500 mB from an Anglesite crystal and four Ender Pearls.
Redfrigium
2,000 mB from 1,000 mB of cryomisi and 1,000 mB of tangerium.

Liquid fuel goes into a Reinforced reactor through the Fuel Injection Port, which loses no material; set to outlet, it gives the liquid waste back. Verderium is a fuel of its own, and its waste, rossinite, is what the last Reprocessor recipes need. Cryomisi, tangerium and redfrigium are moderators: pour them inside the reactor between the rods.

The Energizer: storing the power

The Energizer is the mod's battery. It is a box from three by three by three up to 32 on a side, framed in Energizer Casing and filled completely with Energy Cells. It needs at least one Controller on a side face and Power Ports to move FE in and out; the active one pushes power into what is connected. A Charging Port fills an item's battery.

The cells are the expensive part. Each one is an Energy Core (four Anglesite crystals, two eyes of ender, a Magentite Block and two redstone blocks) with four Benitoite crystals, two gold blocks and two iron blocks around it. Benitoite Ore is in the Nether and Anglesite Ore in the End.

Questions

How do I get yellorium in ATM10?

You use uranium. ATM10 switches off Yellorite Ore and treats yellorium and uranium as one material, so mine All The Ores' Uranium Ore, smelt the raw uranium and put the ingots in the reactor. Recipes that ask for yellorium take uranium ingots.

Why won't my Extreme Reactors reactor form?

Right-click any of its blocks and it names the problem. The usual ones: something other than casing on an edge, a control rod that is not at the end of a fuel rod column, control rods on two different faces, or a block inside that is not a valid moderator.

What is the best coolant in Extreme Reactors?

In ATM10 water is the only coolant, and steam the only vapor. Cryomisi, tangerium and redfrigium are moderators that fill the inside of a reactor; the Fluid Ports do not accept them.

What makes a good Extreme Reactors design?

Several columns of fuel rods within four blocks of each other, so their radiation reaches each other and the fuel burns more slowly, with a moderator between them and plenty of fuel behind each control rod. Graphite takes as little radiation as empty space and softens it far more; vibranium softens it most of all.

How many blades does an Extreme Reactors turbine need?

One blade for every 25 mB/t of steam on a Reinforced turbine, or 15 mB/t on a Basic one. The Reinforced turbine's top flow of 2,000 mB/t needs 80 blades.

What RPM should my turbine run at?

900 or 1800 RPM, where it is most efficient. Between them efficiency drops as low as half, and below 500 RPM it is at most half. Add coils to slow the rotor; remove some, or add steam, to speed it up.

What do I do with cyanite?

Build turbines with it: every turbine housing, shaft and blade takes cyanite. The rest goes into a Reprocessor, two ingots and 1,000 mB of water for one Blutonium Ingot, which is fuel again.

Can a reactor burn uranium from Mekanism or Modern Industrialization?

Yes. A reactor burns every uranium ingot and uranium block in the pack, whichever mod made it, and Modern Industrialization's plutonium burns as blutonium.
