Homestead modpack crashing: how to fix it

When Homestead 2.0 crashes, check these in order: the memory you gave it (6 to 8 GB, never past 10), Java 17, any mod you added or updated yourself, shaders and your graphics driver, and on Linux a window that closes, which one small mod fixes. The crash report is in the crash-reports folder of your Homestead profile, and each fix is below.

Too little memory, or too much

The authors' install guide puts memory first among the reasons Homestead crashes on startup, with 6 GB as the least it should get. Their Recommended Settings page puts the top at 10 GB and says more than that can hurt performance.

  1. Open the CurseForge app, then Settings, the gear icon.
  2. Pick Minecraft and find Java Settings.
  3. Set Allocated Memory between 6144 and 8192 MB.
  4. Start Homestead again.

The other launchers, and what a server needs, are on the RAM page.

The wrong Java

Homestead 2.0 runs Minecraft 1.20.1 on Fabric Loader 0.19.5, and the authors name Java 17 in their troubleshooting steps. The server pack's start script stops on anything older than 17.

  1. Open the Homestead profile's settings in your launcher and find its Java section.
  2. If it points at a Java you chose yourself for another pack, pick Java 17 there, or clear it so the launcher chooses.
  3. Start the game again.

A mod you added or updated

The day after 2.0 came out, players reported that the game crashed every time they opened Video Settings. On the pack's GitHub, Tokimi traced it to Entity Texture Features and Entity Model Features, two mods they had added themselves. The fix was to remove both, or to remove Sodium Options Mod Compat for anyone who wanted to keep them.

Updating a single mod inside the pack breaks it the same way. The authors' advice there is a clean install with your world carried over.

  1. Copy your world out of the profile's saves folder.
  2. Remove every mod you added, and put back the version the pack shipped for any you updated.
  3. If it still crashes, delete the profile and install Homestead 2.0 again.
  4. Copy the world back into saves.

What the pack itself runs is on the 2.0 mod list.

Shaders and graphics drivers

The authors list an outdated graphics driver among the causes of a crash on startup. Shaders are the other heavy part: 2.0 ships Iris with eight shader packs, switched off in its settings file until you turn them on.

  1. Update your graphics card's driver from its maker's site.
  2. Press K in a world to switch shaders off, or turn them off in Options, Video Settings, Shader Packs.
  3. Lower the render and simulation distance from the 12 chunks the pack starts with.

On a Mac the authors warn that shaders can be tricky. If Homestead crashes there before it finishes starting, their fix is to remove the spark mod. 2.0 also ships spark with its background profiler turned off, because it crashed Macs and Linux machines.

Which shader packs are the light ones is on the shaders page.

On Linux, a blank window that closes

On Linux the game window can open empty and close before the title screen. A player hit it on 2.0 with the CurseForge app on Linux Mint, and the fix Tokimi gave on GitHub was the GLFW X11 Fix mod.

Its page explains why. Fabric opens files for every mod it loads, and past about 450 mods the older GLFW library in Minecraft 1.20.1 can crash on X11. Fabric counts 524 mods in Homestead 2.0 on our server.

  1. Download GLFW X11 Fix for Fabric.
  2. Put the jar in the mods folder of the Homestead profile.
  3. Start the game again.

Windows and macOS do not need it.

A 1.3.7 world opened in 2.0

2.0 removed mods that older worlds use, among them Storage Drawers, Iron Chests: Restocked, Eldritch End and Copper Age Backport. A kept world loads, and whatever was in those mods is gone, so make a copy before the first load.

  1. Copy the world folder out of the profile before you update.
  2. Still on 1.3.7, move what Storage Drawers and Iron Chests: Restocked hold into Sophisticated Storage.
  3. Update to 2.0 and load the world.

Every step, and which items cannot be saved, is on the 2.0 page.

When it lags

The pack already carries the usual performance mods: Sodium, Lithium, FerriteCore, ModernFix, ImmediatelyFast, Entity Culling, MoreCulling, C2ME and StutterFix. There is nothing to add, and a mod added on top brings back the third cause above.

  1. Switch shaders off with K, or pick Potato Shaders or MakeUp Ultra Fast, the two light packs.
  2. Lower the render and simulation distance in Video Settings.
  3. Give the game 6 to 8 GB, and no more than 10.
  4. If it still stutters, type /sparkc profiler start, play for a minute where it lags, then type /sparkc profiler stop. spark gives you a link to the result, which is what to show the authors.

2.0 dealt with two lag sources of 1.3.7. The authors turned off Sulfur Cube spawning, which caused a large lag spike, and removed the End Ocean of the Dimensional Tears, which lagged the End. They also retuned StutterFix to leave the processor more room on mid and high end machines.

On a server, /spark tps shows how many ticks a second it keeps up and /spark health adds memory and processor use.

Finding the crash report

  1. In the CurseForge app, open Homestead, press the three dots beside Play and choose Open Folder.
  2. Open crash-reports and take the newest file. Its name is crash- with the date and time, ending in -client.txt.
  3. Take logs/latest.log too. If the game froze without writing a crash report, latest.log is the one that matters.
  4. Upload both to mclo.gs, the log site the authors' own guide uses, and share the links.

In Prism Launcher both folders are inside the instance's .minecraft folder, and Prism can upload a log to mclo.gs itself from the instance's Other Logs tab.

What the pack does when it crashes

Not Enough Crashes
Built to take you back to the title screen after a crash. Its own setting says that part stays off whenever Iris is installed, and Homestead ships Iris, so a crash in a world still closes the game. When the game fails to start it can show a screen naming the mods it suspects. Either way the report goes to crash-reports.
Neruina
When a mob, a block or an item crashes while it ticks, Neruina stops only that thing, says so in chat, and the world keeps running with nothing lost. An operator can teleport to it, try to resume it or kill it. After 10 of these within five minutes it crashes the game on purpose, with a report of every one.
MixinTrace
Adds the mixins in the crashing code to the crash report, which shows the mods that changed that code.
Mixin Conflict Helper
When two mods' mixins clash at startup, it names both on a screen before the game closes.
spark
The profiler for lag above. 2.0 ships it with the background profiler off.
ModernFix
Lowers memory use and fixes bugs in the game itself. The pack switches on one more of its options, dynamic resources.

If your server crashes

Run the start script once before anything else. The 2.0 server pack leaves out eight mods, Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks among them, because of their licences, and startserver.sh or startserver.bat downloads them. Tokimi confirmed on GitHub that this is intended.

Give each server its own voice chat port. When we first started ours, the log said Failed to run voice chat at UDP port 24454 and the whole server shut down a second after it finished loading, because another server on the same machine already had that port. Set port in config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties to a free UDP port and open it in the firewall.

If you host on Crafty Controller, check eula.txt. Crafty read only its first line and wanted exactly eula=true with no line break after it. With one, it refused to start the server and wrote nothing to the log.

The server pack starts Java at 6 GB and lets it grow to 8. What ours really used is on the RAM page.

Neruina runs on the server too, so a mob or block that crashes is stopped there and named in chat. Its actions need an operator.

Setting up the server pack from the start is on the server files page.

Still crashing?

Ask the authors, with the crash report and latest.log. Their Discord is where they help players, and bugs go on their GitHub issue tracker, which the wiki links. Say what you were doing when it crashed and which launcher you use.

On 25 October 2026 the newest file on CurseForge was still 2.0, from 22 October. Tokimi has spoken of a next hotfix on GitHub.

Questions

Why does Homestead keep crashing?

Check the memory first (6 to 8 GB, no more than 10), then any mod you added or updated, then shaders and your graphics driver. The crash report in crash-reports names the mods involved, because MixinTrace adds them to it.

Why does Homestead crash on startup?

The authors' list is less than 6 GB of memory, a Java other than 17, or an old graphics driver. On a Mac remove spark, and on Linux add GLFW X11 Fix.

Why does Homestead crash when I open Video Settings?

Because of Entity Texture Features and Entity Model Features, which are not part of the pack. Remove them, or remove Sodium Options Mod Compat if you want to keep them. That is Tokimi's own answer on GitHub.

Does Not Enough Crashes keep me in the game?

Not in Homestead. It switches that feature off when Iris is installed, and Homestead ships Iris. It still writes the crash report and, at startup, can name the mods it suspects.

Will more RAM stop Homestead crashing?

Up to 8 GB it can. The authors say more than 10 GB may hurt performance. The RAM page has the details.

How do I make Homestead run better?

Switch shaders off with K, lower the render and simulation distance, and keep the memory between 6 and 8 GB. If it still lags, /sparkc profiler start and /sparkc profiler stop give you a report to show the authors.

Does Homestead run on a Mac?

Yes. The authors say beta testers ran it on Mac laptops and desktops. Shaders can give trouble there, and a crash before the game boots is fixed by removing spark.

My Homestead server crashes. Where do I start?

Run the start script once so it downloads the mods the server pack leaves out, give voice chat a free UDP port, and read the server's logs/latest.log. The server files page covers the setup.

Can I play Homestead without running a server?

Yes. Our Homestead world runs 2.0, and playing Homestead with friends compares every way to do it.
