The shaders in Homestead 2.0
Homestead 2.0 comes with Iris and eight shader packs already installed: Complementary Reimagined on its own and in three presets made by the pack's authors (Low, Mid and Extreme), plus Potato Shaders, MakeUp Ultra Fast, Nostalgia and Super Duper Vanilla. They start switched off. Potato Shaders is the one selected, so turning shaders on without picking one gives you that.

The shader packs
- Potato Shaders
- The one the pack has selected. Its author built it to stay as light as possible, for modest PCs.Version 1.0d. A separate CurseForge download in 1.3.7.
- MakeUp Ultra Fast
- Built around quality for its cost, with settings you can lower to suit your PC.Version 9.4b. A separate CurseForge download in 1.3.7.
- Complementary Reimagined, Low
- Shadows reach 64 blocks; bloom, ambient occlusion, light shafts and mob shadows are off, and the clouds are the simple kind.Version r5.9.3 with Euphoria Patches 1.10.5. In 1.3.7 as r5.7.1 with Euphoria Patches 1.8.6, with a pixelated look that 2.0 dropped.
- Complementary Reimagined, Mid
- Shadows reach 128 blocks, light shafts and block reflections are on at a low setting, clouds cast shadows, mobs cast none.Version r5.9.3 with Euphoria Patches 1.10.5. In 1.3.7 as r5.7.1 with Euphoria Patches 1.8.6.
- Complementary Reimagined, Extreme
- Shadows reach 256 blocks at the highest quality, with coloured light from glowing blocks, puddles when it rains, reflections of the world in water and the most detailed clouds.Version r5.9.3 with Euphoria Patches 1.10.5. In 1.3.7 as r5.7.1 with Euphoria Patches 1.8.6.
- Complementary Reimagined
- The shader on its own, with its own profiles from Potato to Ultra in its settings.Version r5.9.3. In 1.3.7 as r5.7.1.
- Nostalgia
- The look of the first shader packs, with newer effects such as volumetric fog. The pack's settings file turns its path tracing on.Version 5.1. A separate CurseForge download in 1.3.7.
- Super Duper Vanilla
- Close to the game's own look, after the Super Duper Graphics Pack Mojang once announced and cancelled.A separate CurseForge download in 1.3.7.
What is on at first
The pack's Iris settings file says enableShaders=false and shaderPack=PotatoShaders_v1.0d.zip, in 2.0 and in 1.3.7 alike. A new install opens with shaders off and Potato Shaders waiting in the list.
The pack's CurseForge page and the official Homestead wiki say the shaders come switched on. The settings file is what the game reads, so on a fresh 2.0 install they are off until you turn them on.
Turning them on
- Open Options, then Video Settings.
- Press Shader Packs.
- Pick a pack from the list and turn shaders on with the switch at the top of that screen.
- Press Apply, then Done.
Two keys do the same from inside a world: O opens the shader packs screen and K turns shaders on or off. You can change both in Controls.
Each Complementary entry has its own settings, kept beside it in the shaderpacks folder. Shader Pack Settings, on the same screen, opens them.
On a weaker PC
Leave shaders off, or press K in game to switch them off. The Recommended Settings page on the official Homestead wiki, the authors' own guide to this, says turning them off can greatly help on a lower end laptop, and suggests doing it before you load a world.
Then lower the render and simulation distance in Video Settings. The pack starts both at 12 chunks.
If you still want shaders, the two light packs in the list are Potato Shaders and MakeUp Ultra Fast. Their authors made them for that.
On a Mac the wiki warns shaders can be tricky, and says that a crash before the game even starts is fixed by removing the spark mod.
What changed since 1.3.7
The same families as in 1.3.7, updated. Complementary Reimagined went from r5.7.1 to r5.9.3 and Euphoria Patches from 1.8.6 to 1.10.5, and MakeUp Ultra Fast is 9.4b.
In 1.3.7 four of them, Nostalgia, Potato Shaders, Super Duper Vanilla and MakeUp Ultra Fast, were separate CurseForge downloads in the pack's mod list. In 2.0 they are gone from that list and their files sit in the shaderpacks folder instead.
The Low preset lost the pixelated shadows and outlines it had in 1.3.7, and casts shadows over a shorter distance.
Questions
Does Homestead come with shaders?
Yes. 2.0 ships Iris and eight shader packs in its shaderpacks folder. They start switched off, with Potato Shaders selected.
What are the best shaders for Homestead?
The ones the pack's authors set up: Complementary Reimagined with Euphoria Patches, in their Low, Mid and Extreme presets. On a weaker PC, Low, Potato Shaders and MakeUp Ultra Fast are the lighter choices.
How do I turn shaders off in Homestead?
Press K in game, or open Options, Video Settings, Shader Packs and switch them off there.
Can I add another shader pack?
Yes. Homestead runs Iris, so a pack made for Iris on Minecraft 1.20.1 goes into the shaderpacks folder of the Homestead profile and appears in the list.
Do shaders work on a server?
Shaders only change what your own game draws, so they work on any server, ours included, and nobody else sees them. The server needs nothing.
Do shaders need more RAM?
None of the pack's sources gives a memory figure for shaders. What it says about memory is on the RAM page.
Can friends use different shaders on the same world?
Yes, each of you picks your own. How a group shares a farm is on playing Homestead with friends.
Who makes Homestead
Homestead is made by Tokimi and Meleon of CozyStudios. Its home is the CurseForge page, the official Homestead wiki has the authors' own guides, and their Discord is where to ask them about the pack.
