How much RAM Homestead needs
Give Homestead 2.0 6 to 8 GB of memory on your PC, and no more than 10: the pack's own pages say more can make it slower. A server needs 6 to 8 GB for Java, the figures in the server pack's own files, and about 10 GB free on the machine. Our Homestead server used 9.8 GB while it pregenerated its world on 25 October 2026.

The short answer
- Your PC
- 6 GB at least, 8 GB recommended, no more than 10 GB.
- A server's Java
- Starts at 6 GB and may grow to 8 GB, as the server pack's user_jvm_args.txt sets it.
- A server's machine
- About 10 GB free for the server alone. Java needs memory beyond the heap.
- Java
- 17 or newer.
What the pack says
The authors' own guide to this is on the official Homestead wiki. Its install guide puts the minimum at 6 GB and recommends 8. Its Getting Started and Recommended Settings pages, and the CurseForge page, add a ceiling: 10 GB, because past that the game can run worse. The pack's files say nothing about the client's memory, so these pages are the only source for it.
For a server the pack's two sources disagree. The Server Pack page on the wiki asks for at least 8 to 12 GB and says to change -Xmx6G -Xms6G in a variables.txt. The 2.0 server zip has no such file. Its memory is in user_jvm_args.txt, set to -Xms6G and -Xmx8G: Java takes 6 GB at start and may grow to 8. The same file turns on -XX:+AlwaysPreTouch, so those first 6 GB are taken from the machine the moment it starts. Our server ran the file as it ships when the figures below were taken. From its first restart after 25 October 2026 it starts at 4 GB and may grow to 10, without AlwaysPreTouch, so a quiet server hands memory back.
What our server used
- Taken
- 25 October 2026, 13:27 to 13:32 UTC, with nobody online.
- Doing
- Pregenerating the overworld out to 5,000 blocks with Chunky, about 43 chunks a second.
- Java heap
- All of its 8 GB ceiling.
- Whole process
- 9.8 GB of the machine's memory.
- Beyond the heap
- 1.8 GB.
- Processor
- About six of the 16 threads of an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X.
- Start time
- 89 seconds the first time, when it made the world, and 24 seconds after that.
- Mods
- 314 files in mods/, which Fabric counts as 524 with the libraries inside them.
- Java
- Eclipse Temurin 17.0.20.1
These figures are from 25 October 2026, with the pack's own 6 and 8 GB, while our world was still being prepared and Chunky generated every chunk out to 5,000 blocks before anybody joined. Pregeneration raises memory use, and Java had grown its heap to the full 8 GB.
With an 8 GB heap the process held 9.8 GB, because Java keeps the loaded mods' code, its threads and the chunk generator's work outside the heap. A machine with exactly 8 GB has nothing left for that, or for the system.
Setting it in CurseForge
- Open the CurseForge app and go to Settings, the gear icon.
- Pick Minecraft in the list of games and find Java Settings.
- Move Allocated Memory to between 6144 and 8192 MB, which is 6 to 8 GB.
- Leave the rest of your PC's memory for the system and whatever else is open.
- Start Homestead from the app. If it still starts with less, open that profile's own options: a profile can keep a memory setting of its own, and it wins.
Questions
Is 6 GB enough for Homestead?
On your PC, yes: 6 GB is the minimum all of the pack's pages give. On a server 6 GB is where Java starts, and the server pack lets it grow to 8. Ours used all 8 while it pregenerated the world.
Should I give Homestead 8 GB or 12 GB?
8 GB on a PC. The pack's own pages say more than 10 GB can make it run worse. For a server the wiki asks for 8 to 12 GB, while the server pack itself stops Java at 8. Whatever you pick, the machine needs more: ours used 1.8 GB beyond its heap.
How much RAM per player does a Homestead server need?
None of the pack's pages gives a figure per player. The server pack page only says that a server for three to five players or more needs more memory. Our measurement was taken with nobody online.
Which Java version does Homestead need?
Java 17 or newer, for Minecraft 1.20.1. The server pack's start script stops with an error on anything older. Ours runs Eclipse Temurin 17.0.20.1.
Why does my server use more memory than -Xmx?
-Xmx limits the heap, and Java needs memory outside it as well. On ours that was 1.8 GB on top of an 8 GB heap.
Homestead still stutters with enough memory. What else helps?
The pack's recommended settings page says to turn the shaders off on a weaker PC and to lower the render and simulation distance. Both start at 12 chunks in the pack. How to switch the shaders off is on the shaders page.
Do I need a server of my own to play Homestead with friends?
No. Our Homestead world is being prepared on 2.0, and playing Homestead with friends compares every way to do it, a server of your own included.
Who makes Homestead
Homestead is made by Tokimi and Meleon of CozyStudios. Its home is the CurseForge page, the official Homestead wiki has the authors' own guides, and their Discord is where to ask them about the pack.
