Immersive Engineering

A tech based mod focused on realism.
Immersive Engineering is industry you can walk around in: brick ovens, blast furnaces, windmills and machines several blocks tall, joined by wires strung between posts. Most of it is built as multiblocks and switched on with a whack of the Engineer's Hammer, and the whole mod comes with its own book, the Engineer's Manual.

Getting started
Craft the Engineer's Manual from a book and a lever, and the Engineer's Hammer from iron, string and sticks. A multiblock is built from its blocks in the shape the manual shows, then formed by hitting the right block with the hammer.
The first one is the Coke Oven: 27 Coke Bricks in a three by three by three cube, formed by hammering the middle block of one side. Coke Bricks are clay, bricks and sandstone. The oven slowly turns coal into Coal Coke and logs into charcoal, sixteen coal or eight logs at a time, so build a few and keep them stocked.
It also makes Creosote Oil, which the oven keeps until you pump it out. Planks soaked in creosote are Treated Wood, the mod's building wood.
- Make the manual and the hammer.
- Build a Coke Oven or two for coal coke and creosote.
- Build a blast furnace and make steel.
- Build an Engineer's Workbench and start on components and power.
Steel
The Crude Blast Furnace is 27 Blast Bricks, formed the same way. Iron and a high-carbon fuel, coal coke or charcoal, become Steel and Slag, and the slag has to be taken out or the furnace stops. Everything goes in and out by hand.
The Improved Blast Furnace, built from Reinforced Blast Bricks (a Blast Brick and a steel plate), takes items through a hopper on top, pushes steel out of the front and slag out of the back, and takes preheaters to work faster.
A steel ingot and the hammer make a Steel Plate at a crafting table. The Metal Press does it without the hammer, and sheetmetal, scaffolding and engineering blocks all start from plates.
The workbench and components
The Engineer's Workbench makes what an Engineer's Blueprint describes: put the blueprint on the left and the materials in the middle. The components blueprint makes Iron and Steel Mechanical Components and Vacuum Tubes; the molds blueprint makes the Metal Press's molds, like the plate mold.
Light Engineering Blocks, iron sheetmetal and an iron component, and Heavy Engineering Blocks, steel sheetmetal and a steel component, are the bodies of most of the big machines.
Power
IE machines run on ordinary Forge Energy, so any generator in ATM10 can feed them. IE's own start with the Kinetic Dynamo, turned by a Windmill or a Water Wheel built after it. A windmill turns faster with open space in front of it and in a storm, and faster again with sails of Tough Fabric. A water wheel needs steel, turns with the water around it, and up to three can share one shaft.
A Thermoelectric Generator makes power from a hot block on one side and a cold one on the other, like lava and water. For a lot of power the Diesel Generator burns Biodiesel, which takes the Squeezer, the Fermenter and the Refinery to make.
Wires
Power travels on wires strung between connectors and relays. Use a wire coil on one connector, then on the next, and keep the line clear: a block in the way breaks it.
- Low voltage
- LV Wire Coil on copper LV Connectors.
- Medium voltage
- MV Wire Coil on electrum MV Connectors.
- High voltage
- HV Wire Coil on aluminium HV Connectors.
Each wire carries only so much, and a wire asked to carry more burns up. A connector only takes wire of its own voltage; a Transformer joins low and medium, and the HV Transformer joins high to the others. Low and medium wire can be insulated so it doesn't hurt anyone who touches it.
Accumulators store power, in the same three voltages, and the Engineer's Wire Cutters take a wire down.
The big machines
- Crusher
- Grinds ores and ingots to dust and cobblestone to gravel. Its speed follows the power you give it.
- Metal Press
- Presses plates, rods and other shapes, with a mold fitted to its piston.
- Arc Furnace
- Smelts and alloys big batches fast, for a lot of power. Its electrodes wear out after about four days of smelting and have to be replaced by hand: Graphite Electrodes.
- Squeezer
- Presses plant oil out of seeds and crops.
- Fermenter
- Makes ethanol from fruit, grain and vegetables.
- Refinery
- Mixes fluids over a catalyst, such as plant oil and ethanol into biodiesel.
- Garden Cloche
- The Garden Cloche grows crops with power and water, faster with sulfur or Industrial Fertilizer.
Most of them are formed with the hammer like the ovens, and a redstone signal on their control panel stops them; the Engineer's Screwdriver flips that.
Mineral veins and the Excavator
Under the stone there are mineral veins too sparse to mine by hand. Mineral Survey Tools used on natural stone and soil point you towards one, and each sample narrows it down. A Core Sample Drill then tells you exactly what the vein holds and how much is left.
The Excavator, a bucket wheel on an engine, digs a vein's ores out of the ground where it stands. The vein gives less as it is mined, and runs out in the end.
What ATM10 changes
- For the metals IE shares with All The Ores, IE's machines give All The Ores ingots and nuggets.
- The Arc Furnace turns one ore into two ingots and slag.
- IE's own recipes for invar, electrum, brass, constantan and bronze are gone from the Kiln and the Arc Furnace. Make those alloys in another mod's machine.
- The Crusher also grinds certus quartz, fluix, sky stone and ender pearls into AE2's dusts.
- The Revolver's bayonet takes a Mekanism Tools steel sword.
Tools and gear
The Mining Drill is built around a Heavy Engineering Block and a Steel Drill Head, and takes upgrades. The Revolver and the Railgun are the mod's weapons, the Chemical Thrower sprays any fluid, and the Engineer's Skyhook rides along wires like a zip line.
The Collapsible Glider lets you glide down from a height, and the Engineer's Toolbox carries your tools, wires and components in one slot.
Questions
How do you make steel in Immersive Engineering?
In a blast furnace: 27 Blast Bricks formed with the Engineer's Hammer, fed iron and coal coke or charcoal. Coal coke comes from the Coke Oven.
How do I form an Immersive Engineering multiblock?
Build it in the shape the Engineer's Manual shows, then hit the block the manual names with the Engineer's Hammer.
How do I get creosote oil out of the Coke Oven?
Pump it out, or fill a bucket from it. The oven doesn't push it out by itself.
Why did my wire burn up?
More power went through it than it can carry. Use a higher voltage wire with transformers, or split the load over more than one wire.
Can I make electrum in Immersive Engineering in ATM10?
Not with IE's own Kiln or Arc Furnace recipes: ATM10 removes them. Alloy it in another mod's machine.
What powers Immersive Engineering machines?
Forge Energy, the same as most tech mods, so any generator in the pack works. Bring it in through IE's connectors.
