Functional Storage

Functional Storage.
Functional Storage is drawers: blocks that hold a lot of a few items and show them on their front. In ATM10 it is the cheap answer for bulk materials like cobblestone, ores and ingots. Drawers take storage upgrades from copper to netherite, utility upgrades that pull, push, collect and void, and a Storage Controller joins them into one block for your pipes or your AE2 system. Start with an Oak Drawer (1x1): eight planks around a chest.

Getting started
An Oak Drawer (1x1) is eight planks around a wooden chest. Place it and right-click its front with an item to put the stack in. Right-click twice quickly and every matching item in your inventory goes in too. Left-click takes one item out, and sneak with a left-click takes a full stack. Sneak and right-click to open its menu, where the upgrade slots are.
A drawer keeps its contents and upgrades when you break it, so a full one can be carried and placed somewhere else. Recipes that ask for a drawer take any wooden or framed drawer, but only an empty one.
- Craft an Oak Drawer (1x1) for each bulk item: it holds 32 stacks.
- Add a Copper Upgrade to the busiest ones: 8 times the space on our server.
- Craft a Storage Controller and a Linking Tool once you have a wall of drawers.
- Put a pipe or a storage bus on the controller, or a Controller Access Point where you need one.
Drawers: 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2, and how much they hold
Every wood comes in three sizes. The size decides how many different items a drawer holds and how much of each. These are the figures with no upgrade, for items that stack to 64; an item that stacks to 16 gets a quarter.
- 1x1
- One item, 32 stacks (2,048). Eight planks around a wooden chest.
- 1x2
- Two items, 16 stacks each (1,024). Seven planks and two chests make two drawers.
- 2x2
- Four items, 8 stacks each (512). Five planks and four chests make four drawers.
The woods are oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, warped, mangrove and cherry, and they differ only in looks. Each takes its own planks, and the oak recipe also takes planks from other mods, which have no drawer of their own. A Framed Drawer (1x1) is eight iron nuggets around a chest, or around a 1x1 drawer with its contents kept. Its look is set in a crafting grid: the block for the outside in the first slot, the block for the inside in the second, the framed drawer in the third, and optionally a block for the divider in the fourth.
Storage upgrades: copper, gold, diamond and netherite
A drawer has four storage upgrade slots. Each upgrade multiplies what every slot holds, and several of them multiply each other: two Netherite Upgrades in a 1x1 drawer make 2,048 x 32 x 32, about 2 million items. The same upgrades also raise a Fluid Drawer's tanks and a Storage Controller's range by smaller factors. On our server the multipliers are the mod's defaults:
- Copper Upgrade
- Items 8 times, fluids 4 times, controller range 2 times. Four copper ingots, two copper blocks, two chests and a drawer.
- Gold Upgrade
- Items 16 times, fluids 8, range 4. Three gold ingots, three gold blocks, two chests and a Copper Upgrade.
- Diamond Upgrade
- Items 24 times, fluids 12, range 6. Four diamonds, two diamond blocks, two chests and a Gold Upgrade.
- Netherite Upgrade
- Items 32 times, fluids 16, range 8. A Diamond Upgrade, a netherite ingot and a Netherite Upgrade template in a smithing table.
- Iron Downgrade
- Sets each slot to one stack, 64 items, for automation that needs a small buffer. Eight iron ingots around a drawer.
Right-click a drawer with an upgrade to put it in. When the slots are full, a better storage upgrade swaps out a weaker one and hands it back. An upgrade cannot come out while the drawer holds more than would fit without it.
Compacting drawers
A Compacting Drawer holds one material at three sizes at once, such as nuggets, ingots and blocks, and converts between them as you put in and take out. Put iron ingots in and you can take out blocks or nuggets. With no upgrade it holds 41,472 of the smallest form, which is 512 blocks of a 3x3 material. It has three storage upgrade slots.
The Simple Compacting Drawer has two forms only, such as ingots and blocks, and holds 4,608 of the smaller one, also 512 blocks. Both are stone, pistons, an iron ingot and an empty drawer; the framed versions, Framed Compacting Drawer and Framed Simple Compacting Drawer, use iron nuggets for the stone.
A compacting drawer only uses a recipe that also crafts back, so it knows the block really is nine ingots. The mod adds its own pairs for items that do not craft back: Amethyst Shard, Glowstone Dust, Nether Quartz (four to a block), Melon Slice, and ice to packed ice to blue ice (nine to a block).
Fluid Drawers and the generator upgrades
A Fluid Drawer (1x1) is a tank with the drawer's shape: eight planks around an empty bucket. Right-click it with a full bucket or tank to pour in, and left-click with an empty one to fill it. The tanks hold:
- 1x1
- One fluid, 32,000 mB.
- 1x2
- Two fluids, 16,000 mB each. Seven planks and two buckets make two.
- 2x2
- Four fluids, 8,000 mB each. Five planks and four buckets make four.
Storage upgrades raise a tank by half their item figure: a Copper Upgrade 4 times, Netherite 16 times. Three upgrades fill a drawer for free:
- Dripping Upgrade
- Puts 20 mB of lava a second into the fluid drawer it sits in. Pointed dripstone, a cauldron, a lava bucket and six stone.
- Water Generator Upgrade
- Puts 2,000 mB of water into the fluid drawer every tick. Two water buckets, an empty bucket and six stone.
- Obsidian Generator Upgrade
- Puts one obsidian into an item drawer every 15 seconds. Four Dripping Upgrades and a Water Generator Upgrade, shapeless.
The Ender Drawer
An Ender Drawer shares its contents with every Ender Drawer on the same frequency, in any dimension. It holds one item, 8,192 of it (128 stacks), and takes no storage upgrades, only the three utility slots. Six planks, two empty drawers and an ender chest.
- Left-click the first Ender Drawer with a Linking Tool to copy its frequency.
- Right-click the other Ender Drawer with the tool. It now shows the same items.
- If that drawer still holds items, it refuses and warns you; sneak and right-click again to change it anyway.
- Sneak and right-click in the air to clear the frequency stored in the tool.
Breaking an Ender Drawer keeps its frequency, so you can move it and stay connected.
The Storage Controller and its range
The Storage Controller makes every drawer linked to it act as one inventory. Pipes, hoppers and other mods' storage buses on the controller reach all of them, items and fluids. Right-click it with a stack and it goes to a drawer that already holds that item; right-click twice quickly to put away everything in your inventory that is already stored. It is four stone, two quartz blocks, two empty drawers and a comparator.
Drawers are not joined by touching. Each one is linked with the Linking Tool, and only inside the controller's range: 8 blocks from the controller in every direction on our server, up and down included. The controller has four upgrade slots that take the storage upgrades to raise it:
- No upgrade
- 8 blocks.
- Copper Upgrade
- 16 blocks.
- Gold Upgrade
- 32 blocks.
- Diamond Upgrade
- 48 blocks.
- Netherite Upgrade
- 64 blocks. Two of them multiply: 512.
Taking a range upgrade out unlinks every drawer that falls outside the new range, and they have to be linked again. Each drawer's menu has a priority: the controller fills higher ones first, then the nearest.
- Right-click the controller with the Linking Tool to set it in the tool.
- Right-click each drawer in range to link it. Holding the tool shows what is already linked.
- For a whole wall, sneak and right-click in the air to switch to Multiple mode, then right-click two opposite corner drawers: everything in the box between them is linked.
- Right-click in the air to switch between Add and Remove, to unlink drawers the same way.
The Controller Access Point
A Controller Access Point is a second face for a controller. Link it to the controller with the Linking Tool like a drawer, inside the controller's range, and it then behaves as the controller: a pipe or a storage bus on it reaches every linked drawer, and right-clicking it puts items away the same way. Use one to bring the network to your crafting area or to a machine on the other side of the room without moving the controller.
It is the controller's recipe with a repeater for the comparator: four stone, two quartz blocks, two empty drawers and a repeater. The Framed Storage Controller and Framed Controller Access Point use iron nuggets for the stone and take a look like a framed drawer.
Utility upgrades: void, pusher, puller, collector and redstone
A drawer has three utility slots beside the storage ones. Pusher, puller and collector work toward one side of the drawer: right-click the upgrade inside the drawer's menu to change which. On our server they act every 4 ticks.
- Void Upgrade
- Once the drawer is full, more of the same item is destroyed as it arrives. One per drawer. Eight obsidian around a drawer.
- Pusher Upgrade
- Pushes 4 items or 500 mB at a time into the inventory on its side. Six stone, a redstone, a hopper and an empty drawer.
- Puller Upgrade
- Pulls 4 items or 500 mB at a time from the inventory on its side. The same with the hopper on top; each converts into the other alone in a grid.
- Collector Upgrade
- Picks up dropped items in the block on its side, 4 at a time, and on a fluid drawer takes fluid source blocks there. Four stone, two hoppers, two redstone and a drawer.
- Redstone Upgrade
- Gives a redstone signal that grows as one slot fills; pick the slot in the menu. Four redstone, two redstone blocks, two comparators and a drawer.
A Void Upgrade with a locked drawer makes a trash can for one item: the drawer keeps taking it, and anything past full is gone. A drawer also gives a comparator a signal for how full it is, without any upgrade.
The Configuration Tool and locking
The Configuration Tool changes how a drawer behaves and looks. Sneak and right-click in the air to pick a mode, then right-click a drawer to toggle it. Used on a controller, it applies to every linked drawer.
- Locking
- The drawer remembers its item even when empty and accepts nothing else. A locked drawer keeps the lock when broken.
- Hide/Show Amounts
- The counts on the front.
- Hide/Show Item/Fluid Renders
- The item or fluid drawn on the front.
- Hide/Show Upgrade Renders
- The upgrade icons on the front.
- Indicator
- A fill bar: hidden, always shown, shown only when full, or shown when full without its background.
Hold the tool in your offhand while placing a drawer and its current mode is applied straight away, so a wall of locked drawers takes no extra clicks. The tool is five paper, two gold ingots, an emerald and an empty drawer; the Linking Tool is the same with a diamond.
The Armory Cabinet
The Armory Cabinet is for the things drawers cannot hold: items that do not stack. It has 4,096 slots of one item each on our server and takes tools, weapons, armour, elytra, shields, bows, enchanted books, music discs and horse armour, but never an item with its own inventory, such as a backpack or a shulker box. Right-click it for a menu with a search box; pipes and storage buses can reach it too.
It keeps everything when broken. Four stone, three empty drawers, a comparator and a netherite ingot.
What ATM10 changes
- Every figure in the server's config is the mod's default: storage upgrades 8, 16, 24 and 32 times, a controller range of 8, and upgrades acting on 4 items or 500 mB every 4 ticks.
- Eight Tiny Coal compact into coal and eight Tiny Charcoal into charcoal (Utilitarian's), added by the pack's KubeJS.
- The pack lets compacting drawers use one-way recipes for Snowball, string, Honeycomb, Magma Cream, Pointed Dripstone, Productive Bees' Draconic Dust and Obsidian Shard, and Bumblezone's Pollen Puff.
- No recipe of the mod is changed, and no other mod's recipe in the pack uses a Functional Storage item.
Questions
What is the range of the Functional Storage Storage Controller?
On our ATM10 server it is 8 blocks from the controller in every direction. Storage upgrades in its four slots raise it: Copper to 16, Gold to 32, Diamond to 48 and Netherite to 64, and several multiply each other.
What does the Controller Access Point do in Functional Storage?
It acts as the controller from another spot. Link it to the controller with the Linking Tool, inside its range, and pipes, storage buses and right-clicks on the access point reach every drawer linked to that controller.
Why are my drawers not connected to the Storage Controller?
Touching is not enough in Functional Storage. Right-click the controller with a Linking Tool, then right-click each drawer, or use Multiple mode on two corners. Drawers outside the controller's range cannot be linked.
How much does a Functional Storage drawer hold?
With no upgrade a 1x1 holds 32 stacks, a 1x2 16 stacks per slot and a 2x2 8 per slot. On our server a Copper Upgrade multiplies that by 8, Gold by 16, Diamond by 24 and Netherite by 32, and upgrades multiply each other.
Can I connect Functional Storage drawers to AE2 or Refined Storage?
Yes. Put a storage bus on the Storage Controller or on a Controller Access Point and the network sees every linked drawer's items and fluids. A storage bus on a single drawer works too.
