Occultism

A magic mod inspired by the world of Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus.
Occultism is the magic mod where you draw chalk circles on the floor, call spirits out of the Otherworld and put them to work. They crush your ore for up to six times the metal, carry items between chests, mine a dimension of their own for you and hold your whole storage system. It all starts with a weed: break grass until you find Demon's Dream Seeds.

Getting started
Breaking grass drops Demon's Dream Seeds. Keep one and plant the rest. A seed and a book make the Dictionary of Spirits, the mod's own guide, which you will want open for every ritual because it shows each pentacle in the world before you draw it.
The grown plant gives Demon's Dream Fruit. Eating it can give you the Third Eye, though not every time: the screen goes grey and you can see where the Otherworld overlaps ours, and while it lasts you can harvest Otherworld stone and trees. Nine fruit or seeds, in any mix, compress into Demon's Dream Essence, which always works and lasts longer but comes with side effects of its own.
The step that opens the whole mod is spirit fire. Drop a Demon's Dream Fruit on the ground and light it with flint and steel. Then throw a Diamond into the flames and take out a Spirit Attuned Gem. Almost everything that follows needs those gems.
- Find the seeds and craft the Dictionary of Spirits.
- Light spirit fire and make Spirit Attuned Gems and Otherstone.
- Make white chalk, the sacrificial bowls and a bound Book of Binding.
- Draw Aviar's Circle and summon a Foliot Crusher, your first ritual.
Spirit fire
Spiritfire does not hurt living things and does not burn up what you throw into it. It converts it. Throw an item in and the converted one comes out, which is how the mod's basic materials are made without hunting for them. A sacrificial bowl placed above spirit fire, or above a Spirit Campfire, converts whatever is put into the bowl at once, so a hopper can feed it.
- Diamond
- Spirit Attuned Gem, the key to tools, lamps and rituals.
- Andesite
- Otherstone, for bowls, chalk and the storage system.
- Diorite
- Otherrock, the darker variant, for the dark versions of the bowls, wormholes and storage blocks.
- Any flower
- Otherflower, which copies a dye when mixed with it.
- Otherworld logs
- Otherworld Ashes, half of every chalk.
- Black dye, a feather, a book
- Purified Ink, Awakened Feather and Taboo Book, the three parts of a Book of Binding.
- Demon's Dream Essence
- Otherworld Essence, the essence without its side effects. Resurrections and repairs use it.
- Any impure chalk
- The finished chalk of the same colour.
Seeing the Otherworld
Otherworld blocks hide as ordinary ones. To the naked eye an Otherworld tree is an oak and Iesnium Ore is netherrack. Demon's Dream lets you see and harvest the low-tier ones. Otherworld Goggles show you even more, permanently and without the nausea, but they do not let you harvest anything: with goggles on, Otherworld blocks need an Infused or Iesnium Pickaxe.
ATM10 switches off the Otherworld Groves, the underground caves of Otherworld trees and Otherstone the mod would otherwise generate, so on our server you make these materials rather than find them. Spirit fire turns andesite into Otherstone and an oak sapling into an Unstable Otherworld Sapling. Its tree looks like an oak; under the Third Eye you can harvest its logs and leaves. A sapling only drops when you break the leaves by hand; leaves that decay drop oak saplings. The Otherworld Sapling from a sapling trader grows a tree anyone can harvest, Third Eye or not.
The Divination Rod is still worth making for iesnium. Shift-right-click Netherrack to tune it, then hold right-click in the Nether until the animation ends. The nearest Iesnium Ore is outlined through walls, and the crystals tell you the distance: white means nothing was found, and the more purple, the closer it is.
Books of Binding and the four kinds of spirit
Spirits come in ranks, and every ritual names one. The higher the rank, the more it can do and the more the ritual costs.
- Foliot
- The weakest. Manual labour and small artifacts: the first crusher, the transporter, the janitor. Bound with blue dye.
- Djinni
- The rank you will summon most. Better workers, most tools, possessed mobs and most familiars. Bound with purple dye.
- Afrit
- Major artifacts and powerful possessions. Controlling one takes red chalk, made from the essence of an Afrit you have killed. Bound with yellow dye.
- Marid
- The strongest rank you can summon. The best crusher, smelter and miner, and the tier 4 storage stabilizer. Bound with green dye.
A ritual is started with a bound book. Craft a Book of Binding from Purified Ink, an Awakened Feather, a Taboo Book and the rank's dye, or dye a Book of Binding: Empty. Then craft it together with the Dictionary of Spirits to write a spirit's name into it. The Dictionary is not used up, and which name you get makes no difference: only the rank matters.
Faster: put up to six books in a Chiseled Bookshelf and shift-right-click it with the Dictionary to bind them all at once. Empty books in the shelf are bound too if you hold four dyes of the rank's colour in your off hand. A sacrificial bowl holding the Dictionary above the shelf binds them on a redstone signal.
Autocrafting them with AE2 or Refined Storage gets stuck, because every bound book comes out with a random name and the system does not recognise it as the item it asked for. Rename the Dictionary in an anvil first. Every book it binds afterwards carries that one name, and the pattern works.
How a ritual works
- Place a Golden Sacrificial Bowl and draw the ritual's pentacle around it in chalk.
- Place Sacrificial Bowls anywhere within eight blocks of the golden bowl, horizontally. Where exactly does not matter.
- Put the ritual's ingredients in the ordinary bowls, one item per bowl.
- Right-click the golden bowl with the starting item, which is usually a bound Book of Binding.
Purple particles mean the ritual is running, and the ingredients disappear from the bowls one by one. Grey particles mean it is waiting for you. Some rituals want a sacrifice: kill the animal named on the ritual page within eight blocks of the golden bowl, and it has to be a player who kills it. Others want an item used, like an egg thrown, within 16 blocks. Start the ritual first; the grey particles are the cue.
Only the colour and position of each chalk mark matters, never the glyph drawn. The Dictionary shows any pentacle in the world before you draw it, and a ritual page shows its pentacle when you click the blue link at the top.
- Your first ritual
- The Foliot Crusher: Aviar's Circle in white chalk, with an iron, a gold, a copper and a silver ingot in the bowls, started with a bound Foliot book. Drop ore beside it and it crushes each one into two dusts.
- Automatic start
- A hopper or pipe that puts the starting item into the golden bowl starts the ritual. Familiars and tamed animals summoned this way arrive untamed.
- Catching the result
- A sacrificial bowl hung upside down up to three blocks above the golden one catches what the ritual makes. A ritual that makes no item leaves a Flame of Automation there instead.
- Redstone
- The golden bowl gives a signal of 0 when idle, 1 while it waits for a sacrifice, 2 while it waits for an item to be used and 8 while the ritual runs.
- Faster bowls
- The Iesnium Ritual Bowl runs any ritual in a quarter of the time. The Eldritch Chalice and Celestial Chalice finish them instantly.
Drawing big pentacles by hand gets old. The Apprentice Ritual Satchel holds your chalk, candles and skulls and places the right one on each mark of the previewed pentacle, one at a time. The Artisanal Ritual Satchel places the whole pentacle at once and picks it up again when you right-click the golden bowl. The Chalk Brush wipes chalk off the floor.
The sixteen chalks
Every chalk starts as Impure White Chalk: smelt Polished Otherstone into Burnt Otherstone and craft it with Otherworld Ashes. Purify it in spirit fire and you have White Chalk. Every other colour is impure white chalk crafted with a few more ingredients and purified the same way. Chalk wears out as you draw.
- White
- The foundation of every early pentacle. On its own it only attracts Foliot.
- Light Gray
- A better foundation, from silver, iron and calcite dust. It can replace white in almost every pentacle.
- Gray
- A stronger foundation, from Gray Paste, which a Djinni mixes from gunpowder, clay, a phantom membrane and gray dye.
- Black
- The strongest foundation, from three Witherite Dust, which an Afrit makes out of netherite dust, a wither skeleton skull, blackstone dust and a wither rose.
- Purple
- The main glyph of binding rituals, the ones that put a spirit into an object. From end stone dust and obsidian dust.
- Yellow
- The main glyph of possession, the rituals that put a spirit into a mob. From glowstone and gold dust.
- Lime
- Attracts spirits above Foliot, so it is the step up to Djinni. From Research Fragment Dust, emerald dust and slime.
- Orange
- Bait for Afrit. From Cursed Honey, which only a Possessed Bee drops, glow berries and blaze powder.
- Red
- Control over Afrit, from Afrit Essence, a torchflower and redstone.
- Blue
- Control over Marid, from Marid Essence, lapis dust and tube coral.
- Green
- Attracts wild spirits. From Nature Paste, leaves, saplings and seeds bound by a Foliot.
- Light Blue
- Steadies a pentacle. From crushed ice, packed ice and blue ice, which only a Djinni crusher or better can crush without melting.
- Pink
- From three Demonic Meat, which only a Possessed Zombified Piglin drops.
- Magenta
- From Dragonyst Dust, which a Marid makes from amethyst dust, end crystals and dragon's breath.
- Cyan
- The oldest chalk, from iesnium dust, Echo Dust and a glow ink sac. Only a Marid crusher can grind an echo shard.
- Brown
- From Cruelty Essence, dropped by the Goat of Mercy you summon to sacrifice.
Two chalks replace all the others. The Rainbow Chalk stands in for any colour and the Void Chalk for the four foundation greys. Both are forged by an Eldritch spirit, from twelve coloured chalks and the four greys respectively, and both also wipe marks when you crouch.
The pentacles
A pentacle is the drawing around the golden bowl, chalk marks plus the objects that make it stronger. Candles steady it, Skeleton Skulls raise its calling power for stronger spirits, Spirit Attuned Crystals steady it further than candles can and Wither Skeleton Skulls raise the power more than ordinary skulls. Setting up every pentacle in the book takes four areas of 19 by 19 blocks.
- Aviar's Circle
- Summons a Foliot. The simplest one: the first crusher, the smelter, the lumberjack and the traders.
- Ophyx' Calling
- Summons a Djinni, with lime chalk and skeleton skulls: better crushers and smelters, the machine operator, weather and time.
- Abras' Conjure
- Summons an Afrit under control. Needs red chalk and several spirit attuned gems.
- Fatma's Incentivized Attraction
- Summons a Marid: the Marid crusher, smelter and crystallizer.
- Kandar's Opened Conjure
- Abras' Conjure without the red chalk. The Afrit comes out free and hostile, which is the point: killing it gives Afrit Essence.
- Tibira's Attraction
- Calls a Marid with no control at all, to kill it for Marid Essence.
- Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion
- Binds a Foliot into an object: lenses, satchels, the storage actuator base, the first stabilizer, the Foliot miner.
- Strigeor's Higher Binding
- Binds a Djinni: the Infused Pickaxe, soul gems, the familiar ring, the dimensional matrix and mineshaft.
- Sevira's Permanent Confinement
- Binds an Afrit: the Iesnium Ritual Bowl, the Afrit miner, tier 3 stabilizers, repairs.
- Uphyxes Inverted Tower
- Binds a Marid: the Iesnium Anvil, the Marid miner, tier 4 stabilizers, the True Sight Staff.
- Hedyrin's Lure
- Foliot possession: skeletons for skulls, endermites for end stone, the first familiars.
- Ihagan's Enthrallment
- Djinni possession: endermen, ghasts, blazes, bees and most familiars.
- Posuc's Convocation
- Afrit possession: shulkers, the elder guardian, hoglins, the warden, the guardian familiar.
- Odus' Open Convocation
- Afrit possession without red chalk, for the zombified piglin and the guardian.
- Xeovrenth Adjure
- Marid possession: the Goat of Mercy and the Iesnium Golem.
- Susje's Simple Circle
- Resurrection: brings back a familiar that died, or any mob from a shattered soul.
- Osorin's Unbound Calling
- Calls wild spirits with no protection at all: the Wild Hunt, the hordes, the breezes, and the forged blocks like budding amethyst.
- Ronaza's Contact
- Contacts Eldritch spirits, for the end game: the ancient miner, tier 5 stabilizers, the chalices, the trinity gem.
Workers: crushers, smelters and crystallizers
A summoned worker stays where you summon it and picks up the items it can process when you drop them nearby, then drops the result. Each comes in four ranks, and the higher rank works faster and gives more. Pair one with a Transporter to feed it from a chest and a Janitor to collect what it drops, and it runs on its own.
- Foliot Crusher
- Two dusts per ore. Aviar's Circle: iron, gold, copper and silver ingots.
- Djinni Crusher
- Three dusts per ore, and it can crush ice without melting it. Ophyx' Calling: iron, gold, copper and silver dust.
- Afrit Crusher
- Four dusts per ore. Abras' Conjure: iesnium, emerald, lapis, amethyst and obsidian dust.
- Marid Crusher
- Six dusts per ore, and the only one that can crush an echo shard. Fatma's Incentivized Attraction: blocks of diamond, iesnium, emerald and netherite, and a ghast tear.
Smelters cook anything a furnace, blast furnace, smoker or campfire cooks, with no fuel. The Foliot works at furnace speed, the Djinni twice as fast, the Afrit in a tenth of the time and the Marid in a hundredth.
- Foliot Smelter
- Aviar's Circle: coal, a furnace and a campfire.
- Djinni Smelter
- Ophyx' Calling: a fire charge, a blast furnace, a smoker and an igniter.
- Afrit Smelter
- Abras' Conjure: a blaze rod, a lava bucket, a magma block, red nether bricks and a soul campfire.
- Marid Smelter
- Fatma's Incentivized Attraction: dragon's breath, an iesnium block, crying obsidian, blocks of coal and gold, and a Spirit Campfire.
Crystallizers turn gem dust back into gems and get extra gems out of gem ores. The Djinni also breaks amethyst and quartz blocks back down, the Afrit rebuilds crushed blocks, and the Marid turns amethyst clusters into budding amethyst and obsidian into crying obsidian.
- Foliot Crystallizer
- Aviar's Circle: a spirit attuned crystal and amethyst, lapis and emerald dust.
- Djinni Crystallizer
- Ophyx' Calling: gray paste, lapis, amethyst and an emerald.
- Afrit Crystallizer
- Abras' Conjure: gray paste, a lapis block, an amethyst block, a quartz block and a dripstone block.
- Marid Crystallizer
- Fatma's Incentivized Attraction: gray paste, an iesnium block, budding amethyst, a sea lantern and a sculk catalyst.
Helpers you give orders
Some spirits need to be told where to work. Their ritual drops a Book of Calling next to them. Right-click the air to choose a setting, then shift-right-click a block to apply it. The same book shift-right-clicked on its spirit captures it to carry somewhere else. If you lose the book, craft a new one and shift-right-click the spirit with it.
- Foliot Lumberjack
- Cuts trees in its work area, puts the wood in a chest and replants. Aviar's Circle, and the ritual needs a stable Otherworld Sapling, plus oak, birch and spruce saplings and an axe.
- Foliot Farmer
- Harvests and replants crops in its area. Aviar's Circle: Demon's Dream Fruit, wheat, a carrot, a potato and a hoe.
- Foliot Transporter
- Moves items from one inventory to another, machines and other spirits included. It starts in whitelist mode and moves nothing until you add items to its filter. Aviar's Circle: a minecart, a chest, a dispenser and a hopper.
- Foliot Janitor
- Picks up dropped items and puts them in a chest. It also starts in allow mode, so it only picks up what you list; tags work. Aviar's Circle: a Chalk Brush, a chest, a dispenser and a hopper.
- Djinni Machine Operator
- Takes items out of your Dimensional Storage Actuator, puts them in a machine and brings the results back: crafting on demand. Ophyx' Calling: a block of coal, gold and iron ingots and a furnace.
A worker that has cleared its area can pause for a few minutes before it notices new crops or trees. Setting the work area again starts it straight away.
Traders, weather and time
Trade spirits take what you drop beside them and throw back something else. They glow with purple particles while they trade; if they don't, the item or the amount is wrong. They fade quickly, because by default only trader, weather and time spirits suffer essence decay. Every other spirit stays.
- Otherstone Trader
- Turns stone into Otherstone, far more than spirit fire gives. Aviar's Circle: stone, granite, diorite and andesite.
- Otherrock Trader
- Turns stone into Otherrock. Aviar's Circle: deepslate, a dripstone block, calcite and a magma block.
- Otherworld Sapling Trader
- Swaps unstable saplings for stable ones anyone can harvest. Aviar's Circle: oak, birch, spruce and jungle saplings.
- Djinni Gem Gambler
- Takes a gem and throws back a random gem or nugget, rare Iesnium Nuggets included. Pick up the winnings fast, it keeps playing. Ophyx' Calling: an emerald, a diamond block, a gold ingot and a silver block.
- Wondering Trader
- Looks like a wandering trader until you see it with the Third Eye, then sells occult goods. Ophyx' Calling: two Otherworld Essence and two emeralds.
- Weather and time
- A Djinni clears the sky (beetroot, carrot, potato, wheat), sets dawn (a torch, a sapling, wheat, yellow dye) or dusk (gunpowder, rotten flesh, a bone, black dye). An Afrit brings rain or a thunderstorm, with a cow as sacrifice. Each works once and leaves.
Possessed mobs and what they drop
A possession ritual puts a spirit into a mob you then kill. Possessed mobs are tougher than the normal kind and much more generous, and they are how you get rare drops without travelling for them. They count as their ordinary selves when a ritual asks for a sacrifice.
- Possessed Skeleton
- Always drops a Skeleton Skull and does not burn in daylight. Hedyrin's Lure: four bones, a chicken as sacrifice. Skulls are what Djinni pentacles need, so this comes early.
- Possessed Endermite
- One or two End Stone, so purple chalk needs no trip to the End. Hedyrin's Lure: dirt and stone, then throw an egg.
- Possessed Witch
- A filled bottle: experience, honey, ominous or water. Hedyrin's Lure: a glass bottle, redstone and both mushrooms, a chicken as sacrifice.
- Possessed Phantom
- One to four phantom membranes, sometimes a wind charge, and it is easy to trap. Hedyrin's Lure: leather and feathers, with an allay, bat, bee or parrot as sacrifice.
- Possessed Enderman
- One to three Ender Pearls. Ihagan's Enthrallment: a bone, string, end stone and rotten flesh, a pig as sacrifice.
- Possessed Ghast
- One to three Ghast Tears and gunpowder. Ihagan's Enthrallment: soul sand, magma, netherrack, a lava bucket and a diamond, a cow as sacrifice.
- Possessed Blaze
- Two to six blaze rods and a handful of Nether blocks and plants, very rarely ancient debris. It ignores water and snowballs. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a chicken as sacrifice.
- Possessed Bee
- The only source of Cursed Honey, for orange chalk. It keeps its sting and calls other bees. Ihagan's Enthrallment: honeycomb, a honey block, a honey bottle and a honeycomb block.
- Possessed Weak Shulker
- One to three chorus fruit and sometimes a shell. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a slime or magma cube as sacrifice.
- Possessed Shulker
- One or two shulker shells every time. Posuc's Convocation: dragon's breath, end stone and purple glazed terracotta.
- Possessed Elder Guardian
- Two to four nautilus shells and a 40% chance of a Heart of the Sea. Posuc's Convocation, any fish as sacrifice.
- Possessed Hoglin
- A chance of the netherite upgrade template, the snout trim and Pigstep, or your netherite scrap back. Kill it before it turns into a zoglin, unless you are in the Nether. Posuc's Convocation, a pig as sacrifice.
- Possessed Warden
- Six to nine Echo Shards and a chance of ancient city loot. Posuc's Convocation: six sculk, a cow as sacrifice.
- Possessed Guardian
- Every coral, prismarine and sea plants. Odus' Open Convocation, any fish as sacrifice.
- Possessed Zombified Piglin
- One to four Demonic Meat, the only source, for pink chalk. Eating it gives fire resistance. Odus' Open Convocation, a pig as sacrifice.
- Goat of Mercy
- The only source of Cruelty Essence, for brown chalk. Xeovrenth Adjure, with a villager or a player as sacrifice.
Smaller possessions summon a random animal of a group: common farm animals, water animals, small ones, rideable ones, special ones like pandas and sniffers, or a villager. They behave like the real thing, breeding and taming included.
The two essences come from killing spirits summoned free. Afrit Essence: Kandar's Opened Conjure with netherrack, an iesnium ingot, flint and steel and gunpowder, a cow as sacrifice. Marid Essence: Tibira's Attraction with a conduit, prismarine and a ghast tear, then use a trident. Both fights are dangerous, and an unbound Marid attacks from the moment it appears.
Wild spirits
Osorin's Unbound Calling has no protective objects at all. Its rituals start with an item instead of a book, and the strongest of them ask for a villager or a player as sacrifice. In return they call what is otherwise rare.
- The Wild Hunt
- Wither skeletons that drop Wither Skeleton Skulls very often, with minions that must die first. Start with a skeleton skull; copper, silver and gold blocks, a diamond, netherrack and soul sand in the bowls.
- The breezes
- Three of them: a weak breeze for a Trial Key (start with honeycomb), a breeze for an Ominous Trial Key (start with a trial key) and a strong breeze for a Heavy Core (start with an ominous key). Copper bulbs or copper blocks and tuff bricks in the bowls.
- Wild Illagers
- An evoker and his band, for a Totem of Undying and the vex and sentry trims. Start with a golden apple.
- The hordes
- Charged creepers that drop music discs (start with flint and steel), drowned with sniffer eggs, tridents and ocean sherds (a fishing rod), husks with the dune trim and desert sherds (a pickaxe), silverfish with the relic disc and trail ruin trims (a brush).
- Forged blocks
- Wild spirits also make things outright: Budding Amethyst from six amethyst dust, Reinforced Deepslate with a warden as sacrifice, a bee nest, a bell, the wild armor trim and iron, gold or diamond horse armour.
Familiars
A familiar is a spirit that follows you and helps: a buff, or a fight on your side. Capture one in a Familiar Ring and wear the ring as a curio, and you get its effect without it following you around. Whoever releases a familiar from a ring becomes its new master, which is how they are traded.
- Greedy
- Picks up items for you; in a ring it widens your pickup range like a magnet. Upgraded, it finds a block you show it. Hedyrin's Lure: a chest, an iron block, a dispenser and a hopper, a zombie as sacrifice.
- Blacksmith
- Repairs your gear a little whenever you pick up stone, and upgrades your other familiars when you give it iron. Hedyrin's Lure, a zombie as sacrifice.
- Beaver
- Faster wood cutting, and it fells small trees as soon as they grow. Upgraded, it hands out snacks. Hedyrin's Lure: four logs, a pig as sacrifice.
- Deer
- Speed, jump boost and step assist. Upgraded, it hits enemies with a hammer. Hedyrin's Lure, a cow as sacrifice.
- Parrot
- A tamed parrot. Foliot misunderstand orders, so sometimes it is a chicken. Hedyrin's Lure, a chicken as sacrifice.
- Bat
- Night vision. Upgraded, life steal. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a bat as sacrifice.
- Cthulhu
- Water breathing, and it turns lapis into prismarine shards. Ihagan's Enthrallment: eight fish, a squid as sacrifice.
- Devil
- Fire resistance, and it attacks enemies. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a horse as sacrifice.
- Dragon
- More experience from everything. A greedy familiar can ride it. Upgraded, it throws swords. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a horse as sacrifice.
- Fairy
- Keeps your other familiars from dying, helps them, and drains enemies. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a horse as sacrifice.
- Drikwing
- Extra jumps, jump boost and slow falling; upgraded, no fall damage at all. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a parrot as sacrifice.
- Beholder
- Makes nearby mobs glow and shoots lasers at them. Upgraded, it makes you immune to blindness. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a spider as sacrifice.
- Mummy
- A martial artist that fights for you, and a dodge chance. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a llama as sacrifice.
- Headless Ratman
- Steals the heads of mobs killed near it and gives you extra damage against that kind. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a snow golem as sacrifice.
- Chimera
- A mount once you have fed it enough meat. A golden apple splits off its goat, which becomes the Shub Niggurath: take the goat to a forest and give it black dye, flint and an eye of ender. Ihagan's Enthrallment, a sheep as sacrifice.
- Guardian
- Stops you dying, losing a limb each time it does; it arrives with a random number of them. Posuc's Convocation: four diamonds and two golden apples, a villager or a player as sacrifice.
A familiar that dies leaves a Soul Shard. Start Susje's Simple Circle with it and four Otherworld Essence in the bowls, and it comes back. Feeding any spirit Demon's Dream Fruit heals it.
Two summons live in the familiar part of the book without being familiars. The Demonic Husband or Wife (Ophyx' Calling, a chicken as sacrifice) fights for you, cooks food you hand them and makes potions last much longer; the bond is permanent. The Iesnium Golem (Xeovrenth Adjure, an iron golem as sacrifice) is an invulnerable iron golem that guards an area until a player dismisses it by hitting it while crouching.
Iesnium and the tools
Iesnium Ore is in the Nether and looks exactly like netherrack. You need goggles to see it, or the Divination Rod tuned on netherrack to find it, and an ordinary pickaxe cannot break it. Mine it with the Infused Pickaxe for Raw Iesnium, which smelts into Iesnium Ingots. Fortune works on it. Silk touch gives a stable ore any pickaxe can mine once placed.
The Infused Pickaxe is three Spirit Attuned Gems as a pickaxe head, bound to two sticks and two silver ingots by a Djinni in Strigeor's Higher Binding. It is brittle, so its first job is iesnium for an Iesnium Pickaxe, which mines the same blocks and lasts. Each of the first four miner spirits is made with an Iesnium Pickaxe, so this is also the road to automatic mining.
- Otherworld Goggles
- Permanent Third Eye. Lenses from glass panes and a gem, made into Infused Lenses by a Foliot (two silver ingots and a gold one), then crafted with a Lens Frame and leather.
- True Sight Staff
- Held in the off hand or a curio slot, it lets you see and harvest Otherworld blocks, and upgrades the divination rod to find any block. A Marid binding: netherite, an Iesnium Pickaxe, goggles, a divination rod, Otherworld Essence and Marid Essence.
- Iesnium Anvil
- An anvil that never breaks, lets enchantments go one level past their maximum, charges you half the level cost and raises the too-expensive limit. A Marid binding: an anvil, three iesnium blocks and Marid Essence.
- Spirit Grindstone
- Removes only curses and gives back all of their experience, keeps the top item's enchantments when combining, and repairs more. A Djinni binding.
- Butcher Knife
- Pigs, cows and sheep killed with it drop Tallow, which with string makes Large Candles. Large candles also count as bookshelves for an enchanting table. The Iesnium Butcher Knife hits harder, makes some mobs drop their heads and does triple damage to spirits.
Miner spirits and the Dimensional Mineshaft
A miner spirit lives in a Magic Lamp (silver and a gem) and works through a Dimensional Mineshaft, a portal too small for you that leads to a mining dimension. Put the lamp in its slot and ore appears in the output slots. There is no real world being dug, so it costs the server almost nothing. The lamp wears down as the spirit works, and when it breaks the spirit goes home.
The mineshaft is a Djinni binding in Strigeor's Higher Binding: four Otherstone (or Otherrock), a gold ingot, an iesnium block and a spirit attuned crystal. Hoppers or a Transporter should empty it, because when the output is full it throws the rest away. A redstone signal pauses it, and a comparator reads how full it is.
- Foliot Miner
- Brings back whatever it finds: in ATM10, eleven kinds of stone as well as the ores. Slow, and easy on the lamp. Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion: an empty lamp, an Iesnium Pickaxe, an iron ingot and gravel.
- Djinni Miner
- Ores only, faster, harder on the lamp. ATM10 gives it 108 kinds of ore and mineral, modded ones included. It is made from a Foliot miner, with gold, lapis and a crystal.
- Afrit Miner
- The same ores plus nine deepslate ores, faster and kinder to the lamp. From a Djinni miner, with Afrit Essence, an echo shard and crying obsidian.
- Marid Miner
- All of the above plus the rare ones: ancient debris, iesnium ore, stellarite and the Mining Dimension Core Piece. From an Afrit miner, with a netherite pickaxe, a nether star, a totem and Marid Essence.
- Eldritch Ancient Miner
- ATM10 changes this one. Ronaza's Contact, started with a Core Piece, with a Marid miner, a Piglich Heart, an Unobtainium Pickaxe and an Iesnium Pickaxe in the bowls. (The mod's own recipe asks for eight Marid miners.) It brings back whole storage blocks: raw allthemodium, vibranium and unobtainium among them, 59 kinds in all.
Miners take enchantments. Efficiency speeds them up, Fortune and Silk Touch bring back extra, and Unbreaking and Mending protect the lamp as they would a tool. An Afrit renews a worn miner in Sevira's Permanent Confinement with three Otherworld Essence and a gem.
Magic storage
Occultism's storage system is one block, the Dimensional Storage Actuator, that opens like a huge shulker box. It is two things crafted together. The Dimensional Matrix is a Djinni bound into three quartz blocks and an ender pearl (Strigeor's Higher Binding). The Storage Actuator Base is a Foliot bound into an Otherstone Pedestal with two copper ingots and a gold one (Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion). Place the base alone and nothing happens; craft the two into the actuator.
By default it holds 128 kinds of item and 256,000 items in total. Damaged or enchanted copies of the same item each count as a kind. Breaking it keeps everything inside the dropped block, like a shulker box.
- Tier 1 stabilizer
- 64 more kinds and 512,000 more items. A Foliot: a tier 0 stabilizer, a copper block, blaze powder and a gem.
- Tier 2
- 128 kinds and 1,024,000 items. A Djinni: tier 1, a silver block, a ghast tear and two gems.
- Tier 3
- 256 kinds and 2,048,000 items. An Afrit: tier 2, a gold block, a totem of undying, a crystal and Afrit Essence.
- Tier 4
- 512 kinds and about four million items. A Marid: tier 3, an iesnium block, a beacon, two crystals and Marid Essence.
- Tier 5
- 1,024 kinds and about eight million items, forged by an Eldritch spirit from a tier 4 with an enderman as sacrifice.
Stabilizers start from a tier 0, which is an Otherstone Pedestal and adds nothing yet. They point at the matrix, which is the block above the actuator, from up to five blocks away in a straight line, on any side and from above or below. One is enough to start. Breaking one to upgrade it loses nothing: you simply cannot add new items until there is room again.
- Stable Wormhole
- A second access point to the same storage, anywhere. Shift-click the actuator with it to link it.
- Storage Accessor
- The storage in your hand, across dimensions. A Djinni bound into an Inert Storage Accessor with two ender pearls and quartz.
- Stabilized Actuator
- An actuator with the stabilizers folded inside: two tier 5 stabilizers' worth of room in one block, forged by an Eldritch spirit. The items inside survive the ritual.
Hoppers and pipes work with it as with a chest. Pulling items out with filtered pipes searches the whole storage item by item and can slow a server down; a Transporter spirit pulling into a chest next to it, with the pipe on that chest, is much lighter. Putting items in costs nothing.
Everything else worth binding
- Surprisingly Substantial Satchel
- A backpack that holds more than its size. A Foliot binding.
- Ender Satchel
- Your ender chest from anywhere. Shift-right-click binds it to you, so another player can open yours and you can send them items over any distance.
- Fragile Soul Gem
- Carries one mob, once, then breaks. Iron, an egg and glass, bound by a Foliot.
- Soul Gem
- Carries a mob as often as you like; bosses and very large creatures excepted. A diamond set in copper, silver and gold, bound by a Djinni.
- Trinity Gem
- A soul gem with no exceptions at all, forged by an Eldritch spirit from the three essences and six powerful dusts.
- Knowledge Tablet
- Stores your experience. Right-click to put all of it in, shift-right-click to take it out, so it can be handed to another player.
- Vitality Compass
- Right-click a creature and the needle points at it from then on, while it is loaded.
- Entity Wormhole
- A portal for players, mobs and items. A compass sets where it goes: world spawn, a lodestone, your own spawn point if the compass is renamed HOME, a random spot for RTP, your last death with a recovery compass.
- Dimensional Battlefield
- A mob farm with no mob. Give it a mob in a soul gem, a weapon and Demon's Dream as fuel, and an Afrit fights copies of it for the drops. Looting adds drops.
- Dimensional Extractor
- Put a mineshaft, battlefield or worker on top and it moves their results into the inventory underneath.
Questions
Why is my Occultism ritual stuck with grey particles?
Grey particles over the golden bowl mean the ritual started but is waiting for you. It wants either a sacrifice, an animal killed by a player within eight blocks of the bowl, or an item used within 16 blocks, like an egg thrown. The ritual's page in the Dictionary of Spirits says which.
My ritual will not start at all. What is wrong?
Usually the pentacle. Open it in the Dictionary and use the in-world preview: a mark of the wrong colour or in the wrong place, or a missing candle or skull, stops it. Then check that every ingredient is in a bowl within eight blocks and that the book in your hand is bound and of the right rank.
How do I make spirit fire?
Drop a Demon's Dream Fruit on the ground and set it alight with flint and steel. The seeds come from breaking grass.
Where do I find iesnium?
In the Nether, disguised as netherrack. Tune a Divination Rod on netherrack to find it, and mine it with an Infused Pickaxe. A Marid miner also brings back iesnium ore.
How do I get Afrit Essence for red chalk?
Summon an Afrit unbound and kill it. The pentacle is Kandar's Opened Conjure; put netherrack, an iesnium ingot, flint and steel and gunpowder in the bowls, start it with a bound Afrit book and sacrifice a cow. Be ready for a hard fight.
How many items does the Occultism storage hold?
By default 128 kinds and 256,000 items in the actuator alone. Each stabilizer adds more, from 64 kinds and 512,000 items for tier 1 up to 1,024 kinds and about eight million for tier 5.
Do Occultism spirits despawn?
By default only trader, weather and time spirits decay and go home. Crushers, smelters, workers and familiars stay.
Why does AE2 or Refined Storage get stuck crafting bound books?
Each bound book has a random spirit name, so the system does not recognise the result. Rename the Dictionary of Spirits in an anvil and craft with it; every book it binds then carries the same name.
