Botany Pots

Pots for growing different types of plants.

Adds183

Botany Pots grows a crop in a single block. Put a soil and a seed in a pot and it grows on a timer, with no light, water or space around it. A plain pot is harvested by hand, a hopper pot harvests itself and pushes the drops into the block under it, and a waxed pot is only for show. In ATM10 it also grows saplings and Mystical Agriculture seeds. Start with a Hopper Botany Pot on top of a chest.

The three pots and how to craft them

Botany Pot
Five Terracotta around a Flower Pot. Grows the crop and waits: right-click it when the crop is ready and the harvest drops on the ground.
Hopper Botany Pot
A Botany Pot with a Hopper, or five Terracotta, a Flower Pot and a Hopper in one go. Harvests by itself, holds 12 stacks and pushes them down into the block below. It also has a slot for a tool.
Waxed Botany Pot
A Botany Pot with a Honeycomb. Shows its crop fully grown and does nothing else: no growth, no harvest. For decoration.

Each pot comes in 61 materials: plain terracotta, the 16 dyed terracottas, the 16 glazed terracottas, the 16 concretes and 12 kinds of brick, from stone and deepslate bricks to quartz and prismarine bricks. Swap the five terracotta for five of that block, such as White Concrete. The material changes only the look. A pickaxe mines a pot, and it drops what is inside.

Planting: soil, seed and growth time

  • Place the pot and right-click it. Its window opens.
  • Put a soil in the bottom slot: Dirt, Farmland, sand, a water bucket and so on.
  • Put a seed in the top slot: Wheat Seeds, a sapling, a mushroom, a Mystical Agriculture seed.
  • Hover the seed in the window to see how long it takes. A seed on the wrong soil says it cannot be planted there.

A crop with no time of its own takes 1,200 ticks, one minute. Saplings and sculk take two minutes, and the sculk catalyst, sensor and shrieker five. Most crops want dirt: anything in the dirt tag or a farmland, from Grass Block and Podzol to Rich Soil and every Mystical Agriculture farmland.

JEI shows a Crops page for each seed with its soils, time and drops, and a Pot Interaction page. That is the quick way to check a modded plant, since the pack adds hundreds of them.

Soils and what grows on them

Dirt and farmland
Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, melons, pumpkins, flowers, grass, bamboo, sweet berries and saplings.
Sand
Cactus. Sugar Cane grows on sand or dirt.
Soul Sand or soul soil
Nether Wart.
Nylium, netherrack, mycelium, soul soil, dirt
Crimson and warped fungus, roots, sprouts and vines.
Mycelium, podzol or Netherrack
Brown and red mushrooms.
Water Bucket or a bucket of fish
Kelp, seagrass, sea pickles, lily pads and every coral.
Jungle log
Cocoa beans.
Sculk or a sculk catalyst
Sculk, sculk veins, catalysts, sensors and shriekers.

Some soils make a crop grow faster. The growth time is divided by the total of 1 plus every bonus, so a bonus of 0.10 cuts a one-minute crop to about 55 seconds. All of these figures are the mod's defaults, which ATM10 keeps.

Farmland or a sculk catalyst
+0.10.
A crux, such as the Nether Star Crux
+0.50, but only for the Mystical Agriculture crop that crux belongs to.
Efficiency on the tool
+0.05 per level, in a hopper pot's tool slot.

Every Mystical Agriculture farmland counts as dirt, so it is the best soil for ordinary crops and saplings too. Bone Meal adds 20 to 30 seconds of growth, at most once a second, and always stops one second short of ripe, so the last step happens on its own.

A few tools change the soil in place: a hoe turns dirt into farmland and coarse or rooted dirt into dirt, a shovel makes a dirt path, a lava bucket on a water soil makes stone, and a water bucket on a lava soil makes obsidian.

Saplings and trees

Botany Trees is part of ATM10 and lets a pot grow saplings from vanilla and from dozens of mods. A sapling takes two minutes on dirt. An Oak Sapling gives one to four Oak Logs each time, with a 5% chance of a sapling and 5% of an Apple.

Leaves need Shears in the tool slot, so only a hopper pot gives them: one to three per harvest. Without shears a tree gives no leaves.

ATM10 changes the three Allthemodium trees. The Ancient Sapling, Soul Sapling and Demonic Sapling need Nether soil in the mod; the pack lets them grow on any dirt soil. The Ancient tree also has a 5% chance each of the two other kinds of Ancient Log.

Mystical Agriculture seeds in Botany Pots on ATM10

Every Mystical Agriculture seed grows in a pot, and on ATM10 it needs the farmland of its own tier or a higher one. An Iron Seeds crop (tier 3) grows on Tertium, Imperium, Supremium or Insanium Farmland, and elemental seeds such as air and fire grow on any of them, like Inferium Seeds.

Tier 1 and elemental
1,200 ticks, one minute. About 52 seconds on Inferium Farmland.
Tier 2
1,500 ticks, 75 seconds.
Tier 3
1,800 ticks, 90 seconds.
Tier 4
2,100 ticks, 105 seconds.
Tier 5
2,400 ticks, two minutes. About 89 seconds on Supremium Farmland.
Tier 6 (Mystical Agradditions)
2,700 ticks. Needs Insanium Farmland, or the seed's own crux as the soil for a crop that needs one.
ATM10's Magical tier
Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium seeds: 3,000 ticks, Insanium Farmland only. About 107 seconds on it.

Each harvest gives one essence, sometimes a second, and a 10% chance of a Fertilized Essence on our server. The second-essence chance is worked out as if the crop sat on Inferium Farmland, so a higher farmland only makes it faster.

ATM10 switches off seed drops in pots: a pot never gives back seeds. Every new pot needs a seed crafted or found in the usual way.

Automation: hopper pots, tools and comparators

  • Put a Chest, a hopper or a pipe directly under a Hopper Botany Pot. It only pushes when the block below is not air.
  • Fill the soil and seed slots by hand. Nothing can feed a pot from outside, and items come out of the bottom face only.
  • Put a hoe or Shears in the tool slot if you want leaves, grass or other drops that need one, or Efficiency for speed.
  • For a bigger farm, set a row of pots over a line of hoppers or pipes that all run into one chest.

The tool loses one durability per harvest by default, and ATM10 keeps that on. Curse of Idle Hands stops it: the tool takes no damage in a pot, but it becomes useless in a player's hand. It goes on hoes and shears, and villagers can trade it.

A Redstone Comparator reads a pot's progress: 1 to 14 while it grows, 15 when it is ready. On a basic pot, use it to trigger whatever right-clicks the pot.

Waxed Botany Pots

A Waxed Botany Pot is a Botany Pot crafted with a Honeycomb. Put a soil and a seed in it and the plant shows fully grown at once. It never grows, never gives a harvest, and bone meal, hoes and buckets do nothing to it. It does no work on the server, so a wall of them costs almost nothing.

Every material has its waxed version, made the same way from that material's Botany Pot. There is no recipe to take the wax off, and a hopper pot cannot be waxed.

Questions

How do I make a waxed botany pot?

Craft a Botany Pot (five terracotta around a flower pot), then put it in a crafting grid with a Honeycomb. Right-click the waxed pot to put a soil and a seed in; the plant shows fully grown but never gives a harvest.

Why is my botany pot not growing?

Check the soil first: hover the seed in the pot's window and it says if it cannot be planted there. A waxed pot never grows. A basic pot stops when the crop is ready and waits for you to right-click it. Mystical Agriculture seeds need their tier's farmland or a higher one.

Do Mystical Agriculture seeds work in Botany Pots in ATM10?

Yes. Each needs the farmland of its tier or higher; Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium seeds need Insanium Farmland. A harvest gives one essence, sometimes two, and a 10% chance of Fertilized Essence. ATM10 turns off seed drops, so pots never give back seeds.

How do I automate Botany Pots?

Use Hopper Botany Pots. They harvest by themselves, hold 12 stacks and push them into a chest, hopper or pipe directly under them. Soil and seeds go in by hand. A hoe or shears in the tool slot adds the drops that need one.

How do I get leaves from a tree in a botany pot?

Put Shears in a Hopper Botany Pot's tool slot. The tree then gives one to three leaves per harvest beside its logs. A basic pot has no tool slot, so it gives logs, saplings and fruit only.

What is the fastest soil in Botany Pots?

A Mystical Agriculture farmland: Insanium Farmland adds 0.40 to the growth rate, against 0.10 for vanilla farmland, and it works for ordinary crops too. Efficiency on the hopper pot's tool adds 0.05 per level on top.

Written from Botany Pots 21.1.44 and the server's own config, the Botany Pots source code for 1.21.1, Botany Pots Mystical 21.1.12, the Mystical Agriculture compat and Botany Trees 21.1.7, which adds the saplings, and checked against this world’s recipes on .
